As a Peruvian immigrant from a relatively monolithic society, I initially focused more on gender differences rather than<strong>\u00a0racial\/ethnic disparities<\/strong>\u00a0in the tech field.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #1B2C4E;\">However, as I ventured into the tech world in the United States, I soon realized the challenges and insecurities that come with being a minority in a\u00a0<strong>predominantly male-dominated industry.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #1B2C4E;\">As a woman in tech, I have often found myself grappling with insecurities about appearing too feminine, girly, nice, or friendly in an industry historically perceived as a \u201cboys club.\u201d The pressure to conform to masculine norms can be daunting, leading to self-doubt and limitations on personal growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #1B2C4E;\">Repeatedly finding myself as the only woman in the room, or the sole person of color, sparked a deep introspection. I began questioning the reasons behind this glaring gap and pondering ways to close it. This realization fueled my determination to make a difference and served as the driving force behind<strong>\u00a0founding Papaya.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #1B2C4E;\">Papaya was born out of the belief that underserved communities deserve equal opportunities to not only exist but also thrive in STEM fields. Through this platform, we are committed to bridging the gap and ensuring that individuals from all backgrounds have access to resources, support, and opportunities necessary for success in the tech world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #1B2C4E;\">Our peer-to-peer tutoring marketplace provides students in the US access to affordable tutoring services by connecting them to emotionally intelligent STEM tutors in both the US and LATAM, allowing the tutors to earn a living-wage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #1B2C4E;\">Being a woman of color in tech comes with its unique set of challenges, but it also brings a powerful perspective and an opportunity to break barriers. We must challenge the status quo and defy the limitations imposed upon us. By embracing diversity and inclusion, we can create a tech industry that truly reflects\u00a0<strong>the richness of our society.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #1B2C4E;\">Through Papaya, we are paving the way for underserved communities to flourish in STEM.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #1B2C4E;\">Together, we can dismantle barriers, empower aspiring technologists, and build a more equitable and inclusive future.
