Breaking Barriers: Being a Woman of Color in Tech

Being a woman of color in the tech industry is a unique experience, shaped by both gender and racial dynamics. As a Peruvian immigrant from a relatively monolithic society, I initially focused more on gender differences rather than racial/ethnic disparities in the tech field.

However, as I ventured into the tech world in the United States, I soon realized the challenges and insecurities that come with being a minority in a predominantly male-dominated industry.

As a woman in tech, I have often found myself grappling with insecurities about appearing too feminine, girly, nice, or friendly in an industry historically perceived as a “boys club.” The pressure to conform to masculine norms can be daunting, leading to self-doubt and limitations on personal growth.

Repeatedly finding myself as the only woman in the room, or the sole person of color, sparked a deep introspection. I began questioning the reasons behind this glaring gap and pondering ways to close it. This realization fueled my determination to make a difference and served as the driving force behind founding Papaya.

Papaya was born out of the belief that underserved communities deserve equal opportunities to not only exist but also thrive in STEM fields. Through this platform, we are committed to bridging the gap and ensuring that individuals from all backgrounds have access to resources, support, and opportunities necessary for success in the tech world.

Our peer-to-peer tutoring marketplace provides students in the US access to affordable tutoring services by connecting them to emotionally intelligent STEM tutors in both the US and LATAM, allowing the tutors to earn a living-wage.

Being a woman of color in tech comes with its unique set of challenges, but it also brings a powerful perspective and an opportunity to break barriers. We must challenge the status quo and defy the limitations imposed upon us. By embracing diversity and inclusion, we can create a tech industry that truly reflects the richness of our society.

Through Papaya, we are paving the way for underserved communities to flourish in STEM.

Together, we can dismantle barriers, empower aspiring technologists, and build a more equitable and inclusive future. Let us strive to close the gap, inspire change, and create a tech industry where every person, regardless of their background can reach her highest potential.
